THINGS TO DO IN DERRY

litnlderrypeacebridgeday.jpg

Northern Ireland's second-largest city continues to flourish as an artistic and cultural hub. Derry's city centre was given a striking makeover for its year as the UK City of Culture 2013, with the new Peace Bridge, Ebrington Sq, and the redevelopment of the waterfront and Guildhall area making the most of the city's splendid riverside setting.

The northern region of Ireland, located in Ulster, is actually governed by the
United Kingdom so in many respects we have the “best of both worlds” – we have the best of British education and healthcare, coupled with all the culture, literature, hospitality and stunning landscapes for which the island of Ireland is famous.

Derry~Londonderry is Northern Ireland’s second city with a population of over 120,000. It is situated on the banks of the River Foyle, from which the school takes its name. Derry (which comes from the Gaelic name ‘Doire’ meaning ‘oak grove’) is one of the oldest continually inhabited areas of
Ireland. Derry is Ireland’s only completely walled city and one of the finest examples in Europe.

It is a university city with a young population and exciting social scene. Derry is also a centre for
cultural and musical creativity with great festivals and international events such as The Jazz and Big Band Festival; Celtronic Festival; Gasyard Féile as well as a host of other events. The biggest event in the city is the Halloween Carnival at the end of October which brings people from all
over Ireland to the city to take part in a massive street party and fireworks display - it really is an
experience not to be missed!

Derry is the perfect place to learn English and complete your Foundation Degree. It is a relatively small city but packed with lots to do. It is a very safe location and doesn’t suffer from an over-saturation of foreign students like so many UK cities in the summer months - giving you the best opportunity to really meet and speak with the local people!
